A Night Out At The Symphony...From Home

Great Performances | Cleveland Orchestra Centennial

March 19, 2020

By Beatrice Alvarez

As many of us continue to stay close to home and practice social distancing during this national effort to "flatten the curve," going out to a concert isn't really happening. The next best thing to that is enjoying a recorded concert at home. We have five shows for you to enjoy from symphony orchestras across the country.

We're going to go ahead and change into a nice outfit for an evening at the symphony. Yes, we will appreciate a beautiful break from the news to enjoy music from some of the greatest composers in history, like Wagner, Mozart, and Strauss. Or maybe we'll listen to new works from emerging composers whose works are likely the very beginning of incredible careers in music. Either way, we'll stay in and make it a night out, sort of.

The Cleveland Orchestra Centennial Celebration

Turning 100 is no small feat! This gala concert is a magnificent way to celebrate the Cleveland Orchestra's century of live music. Audiences are treated to a show with pianist Lang Lang and to memories from past music directors. Here's to a hundred more years, Cleveland! This evening at the symphony courtesy of Great Performances is available for streaming until April 13, 2020.

South Dakota Symphony Orchestra's Young Composers Concert

South Dakota Public Broadcasting invites us to meet to the next generation of composers. The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra performs new works from high school age composers and if this concert doesn't make you hopeful about the future generation, then I don't know what will.

Opening Night Of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's 75th

Atlanta, you're beautiful. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra knows how to kick off a season and we are lucky enough to witness the show thanks to Georgia Public Broadcasting. Wagner's Prelude to Die Meistersinger resets your mood entirely with its full and energetic sound. And that's just the beginning.

FSU University Symphony Orchestra | February 29, 2020

We are beyond happy to have a recording of Florida State University's Symphony Orchestra 2020 spring program. Station WFSU brings us a wonderful concert featuring music from different eras. Let this talented group of musicians take you to another time and place.

Nas Live At The Kennedy Center: Classical Hip-Hop

A Great Performances treat for Passport members: that time the National Symphony Orchestra took one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time and performed it live at the Kennedy Center. Nas released his debut album "Illmatic" in 1994 and in 2018 we were treated to a whole new listening experience. It's an evening at the symphony unlike any other.
