Celebrate National Puppy Day and Learn Something About Man's Best Friend

March 23, 2019
By Samantha Elander
Our pets are family members because they have their own personalities. Let’s face it, they bring out the best in us. National Puppy Day is March 23rd and we want to celebrate this weekend. Take a break from the long week and learn a thing or two about these cute, fuzzy pups.

Smartest Dog In The World

We all have those doggie Instagram accounts that we can’t help but checking daily. Chaser the Border Collie could easily have a huge following and all due to her owner, John Pilley, who trained her to learn over 1,000 words! She can even decipher nouns from verbs. Doggie goals, right? Watch this clip from NOVA to see how Chaser identifies random toys, including an item she’s never seen nor heard of before.

A Man's Best Friend

The human dog relationship is so special. After all, we’ve coevolved with them for the last 10,000 years. It’s no wonder that we develop “dog voices” and have been caught talking to them. They have that way of looking at us knowingly. In this It’s Okay to Be Smart video, Joe Hanson explains why people have a tendency to communicate with their pooches.

How Your Dog's Nose Knows So Much

Ever walked a dog who is completely fixated on one spot and determined to sniff as long as you let them? What makes dogs’ noses so much more powerful than ours? From KQED’s Deep Look find out what sophisticated equipment is inside that snoot which helps them decipher the smallest notes of a scent from a few hours to even a week ago!

Homemade Dog Treats

Our four-legged friends mean the world to us and homemade treats are a great way to give them a bit of extra love. In this Charlotte Cooks episode, culinary instructor, Pamela Roberts, shares her favorite homemade dog treat recipes. She also consults with a vet to better educate us about which “human food” is and isn’t okay to feed our pets.
